Blackberries

Monday, August 31, 2009

Yesterday Jim was hell-bent on finding enough blackberries for a pie. All of our favorite picking spots were along the edge of dirt roads. Lately the towns have been doing too good of a job of mowing the sides to keep the brush back. Well, lots of the brush were blackberry plants. Anyway, he remembered one patch that was off the beaten path so that was his first stop. He came home with about 4 cups of berries. Not the biggest or juiciest, but good enough berries. I checked my pie recipe and it called for 5 cups and I know I've always used about 6 or more. So we went out searching for some more. We drove slowly down another dirt road and found a plant here and there and finally ended up with enough for the pie!

I had a childhood flashback memory while making that pie. My grandma used to bake on Saturdays and many times she baked a pie for Sunday dinner. She would always take the trimmings from the crust, sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar and bake them for us kids. I did that today and I still like that as much as the whole pie. When Jim saw the pieces, he said his mom used to do the same thing.

We moved the trail cam again. I think this is the same tree we used when we first put it up. I like this spot the best and think this is where it's going to stay for the rest of this year. It gives a nice view of the pond and you'll be able to see the colors changing...and there's a lot of that going on. Even the deer are changing colors. They're losing their pretty red summer coat and turning brownish gray.
