Kenny's Debut

Yesterday we finally put Kenny out by the trail cam. He looks mighty fine standing there like a lawn ornament.Sept 2 Kenny

Later in the night I saw this doe cautiously coming in to get some corn. She approached very carefully, stomped the ground a few times and finally got brave enough to approach the corn to the right of Kenny.

All of a sudden, she turns and sprints off and I'm like "what the heck was that about"? Well, this is what scared her off.

Yup, one of the many black bears came by to check out the new guy in the 'hood. It was really funny watching him sniff Kenny (actually it was Jim's scent he was sniffing). They were nose to nose a couple times. Unfortunately the trail cam was in it's 5 minute rest period when that happened. Jim finally scared the bear away and thankfully he didn't come back.

This is my favorite picture from the night. It's like "Hail Kenny!" Oh and it's obvious the bobcat hasn't hunted down all the bunnies around here. We're going to leave Kenny out for a couple more nights...we don't want the deer to get too used to seeing him. Later in the fall we'll put him/her out again.

Also, the nuts are starting to fall. Acorns and hazelnuts are becoming the food of choice for many of the critters around here. That darned bear should've been out eating them, not hanging around a cabin eating deer corn.

Love the pictures of the doe being ever so cautious. Do those black bear in your area ever attack a human? Hope you don't have to get up a night to make a trip to the outhouse, never know if he'll be hanging around.
